As a law school student in 1989 and 1990, Ellison wrote editorials for the Daily Minnesotan under the name "Keith E. Hakim." He repeatedly defended known anti-Semite, Louis Farrakhan.

When his political aspirations became clear, Ellison falsely told the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota & the Dakotas that his connections to Farrakhan were limited to an 18-month-period during which he helped organize 1995's Million Man March.

By 2016, CNN declared that Ellison had attempted to dupe voters, calling his public relationship with Farrakhan a "decade-long involvement in the Nation of Islam."
