A concrete barrier divided East and West Berlin – physically and ideologically – from 1961 to 1989.

Constructed by East German forces, the wall's sole purpose was to stop the exodus from impoverished Soviet-occupied East Germany to capitalist West Germany.

It symbolized the Iron Curtain separating East and West at the height of the Cold War.

Over 100,000 East Germans risked death to scamper over the wall. Over 5,000 did so successfully. An estimated 200 died.

The 1989 revolutions that sparked the end of communist rule in Eastern Europe, had a profound reaction in Germany, leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
