In fairness to Time, this Prime Minister of France didn't become a Nazi sympathizer until Germany occupied his country.

He received worldwide attention because of his condemnation of the Hoover Moratorium; an attempt to limit the war reparations Germany had to pay from World War One given the severity of the Great Depression.

The French were incensed because they forced Germany to sign a treaty saying they were solely responsible for the war.

This short-sighted hostility directly led to Hitler's rise to power.

Horrifyingly, Laval was all too happy to later help the Nazis round up French Jews. The known anti-Semite shipped hundreds of thousands, with a little prodding from Hitler, to extermination camps.

The victorious allies executed him for treason.
