For decades, Detroit has remained a hotbed for crime.

So much so that the 1987 cult-classic RoboCop takes place in a dystopian, crime-ridden Detroit.

Today, the city's murder rate stands at 39 per 100,000 – 15 percentage points worse than Rio de Janeiro's murderous favelas.
