Once upon a time, California was a swing state. 

George Deukmejian Jr., a Republican and two-term California governor from 1983 to 1991 died May 8 at his home in Long Beach.

He was 89.

Deukmejian is the only governor in U.S. history of Armenian descent. 

As California's chief executive, he appointed more than 1,000 judges, many of whom still serve to this day.
