Following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, a demilitarized zone (DMZ) has divided the island nation between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides.

The DMZ is commonly referred to as the Green Line. Defenses include barbed-wire fencing, concrete walls, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields.

British General Peter Young, commander of the British peace force, a forerunner to the present UN force first proposed establishing a buffer zone to quell ethnic violence.
