A Vietnam War hero, McCain served in the United States Senate for over three decades. He ran unsuccessfully for president twice.

McCain, 81, died August 25, one year after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Although the Republican maverick and President Trump often clashed, he tended to support the administration's agenda – from tax reform to the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
