Cohen admitted to making hush-money payments during the 2016 election to two women who alleged extramarital affairs with Donald Trump. Cohen said he did so at Trump's direction.

Cohen described the payments as "election-related expenses" and "sought reimbursement" – illegally – through Trump's campaign funds.

The president has categorized Cohen's payoffs as private transactions and argues that the blame lies solely with him for any filing mistakes.

Additionally, Cohen pleaded guilty to misleading Congress about the timeline concerning a proposed Trump skyscraper in Moscow, hiding the fact he continued to negotiate with Russian real estate moguls during the presidential election.

Evidence suggests he lied to the president and his family about that as well.

Cohen also pleaded guilty to several counts of tax fraud unrelated to the president.
