The referenced event is the military operation that inspired the book and the movie Black Hawk Down. A Somalian warlord hoarded food during a famine, leading to genocide. The U.S. military went in to ensure starving civilians received U.N. aid. On 3-4 October 1993, militiamen ambushed Army rangers on a mission. Moderate estimates put the death toll of Somali militiamen between 150 to 500. Approximately 200 civilians were killed. Somali men used them as human shields. A few took up arms against American soliders.
